Painting over a stain doesn't fix wet board. If the drywall stayed wet, it needs to come out.
How we fix it
Cut out. Dry out. Rebuild.
Fix the source first. Make sure the leak has been repaired by a plumber or roofer before we start.
Protect the area. Floors and belongings covered, dust barriers up, HEPA air scrubbers running.
Cut out the damage. We remove wet and damaged board back to solid material.
Make sure it's dry. The cavity and framing need to be dry before anything closes up. Replace insulation if it got wet.
Rebuild. New board, tape and mud with a full day of drying between coats.
Blend it in. Finished to match the surrounding wall or ceiling, ready for paint.
Note: if there's visible mould, a remediation specialist may need to handle that part first.

Can water-damaged drywall be saved?
Small surface stains on the board that dried quickly can sometimes be sealed and painted. If the board got soft, crumbly, or stayed wet, it should be cut out and replaced.
How soon should I repair water damage?
Once the leak is fixed and the area is dry, the sooner the better. Wet materials left in place can lead to bigger problems.
